Field of Honor: Fort Logan National Cemetery

THE FOLLOWING IS A SPECIAL
PRESENTATION OF FOX 31 AND OUR ONGOING COMMITMENT TO THE
MILITARY. THE FOX 31 PROBLEM
SOLVERS: SERVING THOSE WHO SERVE
HOW DO WE HONOR THOSE WHO SERVED? THE SOLDIERS AND SAILORS, THE
AIRMEN AND MARINES WITH A CONNECTION TO COLORADO WHO GAVE
SOME OF THEIR LIFE WHERE ALL OF IT? I THINK SERVING OUR COUNTRY IS
PROBABLY ONE OF THE GREATEST CALLING A PERSON CAN ANSWER.>>HOW COME WE THINK THEM FOR
THEIR SELFLESSNESS, FOR THEIR FAMILY SACRIFICE? RIGHT HERE, 1M OF —
IN SOUTHEAST DENVER, A PATRIOTIC VIEW A TRIBUTE EVERYDAY. THIS
IS THEIR OFFICE. IT IS THEIR
JOB TO TEND TO THE INFINITE ROWS OF GRANITE AND MARBLE WHERE
AMERICAN HEROES REST IN PEACE.>>IT IS VETERANS TAKING CARE OF
VETERANS AND OBVIOUS WAY. ALL
OF THESE VETERANS OUT HERE ARE HEROES AS FAR AS I’M CONCERNED.>>THOSE MEN AND WOMEN WHOSE
LEGACIES ARE ETCHED IN STONE. ON THIS MEMORIAL DAY, FOX 31 IS
PRIVILEGED TO TELL YOU THE STORIES OF SOME OF THE 120,000
MEN AND WOMEN BURIED HERE AT FORT LOGAN NATIONAL CEMETERY AND
THE PEOPLE WHO TAKE CARE OF THIS FIELD OF HONOR. GOOD EVENING AND THINKS FOR
SPENDING PART OF YOUR MEMORIAL DAY WITH US. I’M JEREMY HUBBARD
AT ONE OF THE MOST HUMBLY PLACE IN DENVER, FORT LOGAN NATIONAL
CEMETERY. VOLUNTEERS PLACE FLAGS THAT EACH
GRAVESITE IN TRIBUTE OF VETERANS AND FAMILY MEMBERS. HERE. THIS IS A PLACE WITH A CLOSE
CONNECTION TO MEMORIAL DAY. GENERAL JOHN LOGAN GOT MUCH OF
THE CREDIT FOR MAKING MEMORIAL DAY AND NATIONAL HOLIDAY. GENERAL LOGAN ISSUED THE GENERAL
ORDER NUMBER 11, CALLING FOR NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR
THOSE KILLED IN THE CIVIL WAR. THE ORDER WAS THE BASIS FOR WHAT
LATER BECAME MEMORIAL DAY. HE HAS THE PLACE ETCHED IN
HISTORY, JUST AS THIS CEMETERY AND WELL-KNOWN WELL KNOWN PEOPLE
IN TURKEY HERE DO. IT ALL STARTED 128 YEARS AGO AT
THIS VERY HEADSTONE. MABEL PETERMAN, THE DAUGHTER OF
AN ARMY PRMVATE. THE VERY FIRST PERSON BURIED AT
FORT LOGAN BACK IN 1889. SINCE THEN, THERE HAVE BEEN
COUNTLESS NOTABLES BURIED HERE LIKE WILLIAM ADAMS, A VIETNAM
HELICOPTER PILOT SHOT DOWN WHILE TRYING TO RESCUE THREE OF HIS
FELLOW SOLDIERS. HE WAS GIVEN
THE MEDAL OF HONOR AFTER HE DIED. SO WAS FIRST SERGEANT MAXIMUM
YARD WHICH. HE USED HIS BODY AS A SHIELD TO
PROTECT HIS FELLOW SOLDIERS BEFORE HE WAS GUNNED DOWN IN
VIETNAM 50 YEARS AGO. NAVY SEAL DENNY BEATS JUNIOR
LITTLETON IS BURIED HEAR TOO. KILLED IN A FIREFIGHT A DECADE
AGO IN THE MOUNTAINS OF A PIANIST IN
THEY EVEN MADE A MOVIE ABOUT THAT DEADLY ATTACK. AND IN THIS MAZE OF HEADSTONES
HE FIND TWO OTHER BOYS WHO TOUCHED ALL OF COLORADO AND THE
ENTIRE NATION. KYLE IVER VELASQUEZ GUNNED DOWN
APRIL 20, 1999 AT COLUMBINE HIGH SCHOOL. JUST 16 YEARS OLD, THE SON OF A
SAILOR, KYLE WAS BURIED HERE WITH FULL MILITARY HONORS. AND BURIED NEXT TO HIM IS
STEPHEN ROBERT CURNAL, JUST 14 YEARS OLD, THE YOUNGEST OF THE
TEENS KILLED THAT DAY AT COLUMBINE. HE DREAMED OF BEING IN NAVY
PILOT SO IT’S ONLY FITTING HE NOW RESTS HERE AMONG SO MANY OF
THE HEROES. BUT FOR EVERY MEMORABLE MEME
ETCHED ON A HEADSTONE HERE, THERE ARE AT LEAST 10,000 NEW
PROBABLY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF AND SOME OF THE LEAST KNOWN ARE SOME
OF THE MOST VISITED. IT WOMAN NAMED NANCY FELKER MAY
HAVE BEEN THE MOST VISITED PERSON HERE BECAUSE FOX 31
PHOTOJOURNALISTS FOUND OUT NANCY’S HEARTBROKEN HUSBAND
SPENT NEARLY EVERY FREE MOMENT OUT HERE JUST TO BE BY NANCY’S
SIDE.>>I GO TO ALL OF THE CEMETERIES
— BUT THEY DON’T COME CLOSE TO
THIS. I’VE BEEN HERE ALMOST EVERY DAY. TWO OR THREE TIMES A DAY, AN
HOUR OR SO AT A TIME. I’M HERE A LOT. THAT’S WHY THEY WAVE AT ME. THEY THINK I’M PART OF THEIR
CREW. WE CAME HERE 20 YEARS AGO
LOOKING AT DIFFERENT CEMETERIES AND WE DECIDED HERE IS WHERE WE
WERE GOING. WE THOUGHT I WOULD BE FIRST. NOW I THINK IT’S BETTER THIS WAY
BECAUSE I WOULDN’T WANT HER TO HER LIKE THIS. I SAY THE MARINE CORPS CERTAINLY
DIDN’T TEACH ME TO CRY BUT SHE HAS. I JUST DON’T KNOW WHERE ELSE TO
GO WITHOUT HER. OWN NANCY. —
I DON’T KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU AFTER YOU DIE. I KNOW YOU CAN BE IN RIGHT HERE,
I HAVE PINCHED THEN SHE LEFT. THIS IS NO FUN WITHOUT HER. WE ONLY HAD LIKE 11,000 MILES ON
THAT CAR WHEN NANCY DIED AND INTO AN A HALF YEARS IT’S GOTTEN
60,000 AND IT’S ALL FROM HERE TO THE HOUSE. WE ARE FLOWERS AND I DON’T KNOW
WHERE ELSE TO GO.>>A LOVE STORY BETWEEN ARTHUR
AND NANCY THAT WONG OUTLASTED FROM DEATH TO US PART. WHEN YOU SEE ARTHUR OUT HERE,
ASK HIM ABOUT NANCY. WE COME BACK, THE CARETAKERS. MEET THE MEN AND WOMEN THAT
DEVOTE THEIR LIVES TO THIS SPECIAL PLACE, INCLUDING A
MARINE WHO LOST HIS ARM IN AFGHANISTAN.>>HONORING OUR NATION’S
GREATEST FINAL RESTING PLACE.>>MEET ONE OF THE SPECIAL
PEOPLE BEHIND THE SCENES AT FORT LOGAN. HE’S A VETERAN WHO HOLDS
A SPECIAL PLACE IN US HISTORY. HE TELLS US IN HIS OWN WORDS WHY
HE WORKS HERE.>>MY NAME IS JAMES O’NEIL
HUGHES. —
I WORK HERE AT FORT LOGAN BECAUSE I ENJOY WORKING WITH
VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES, KIND OF LIKE TAKING CARE OF
THEIR LAST NEED. I WAS A HOSTAGE IN IRAN IN 1979. IT’S NOT SOMETHING —
I WAS A HOSTAGE FOR 16 DAYS AND IT’S LIKE ANYTHING, YOU ARE ALL
OVER THE PLACE FOR 15 MINUTES AND THE NEXT DAY SOMETHING ELSE
TAKES OVER. I LIKE TO TELL PEOPLE I’VE HAD
MY 15 MINUTES OF FAME AND CALL IT A DAY. THEY FINALLY AWARDED THE
PRISONER OF WAR METAL ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO.
AND WE HAD A CEREMONY HERE AT FORT LAKIN WHILE I WAS ABORTED
THE MEDICAL AND IT WAS A LONG TIME COMING. ONE OF THE THINGS I LIKE AS IF
I’M HAVING A BAD DAY, I JUST LIKE TO COME AND WALK AMONG
BECAUSE IT’S SO PEACEFUL AND QUIET. A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE
EACH HAS HIS OWN STORY. WHILE THEM BACK ON THIS MEMORIAL
DAY AS WE PAY TRIBUTE TO THE VETERANS LAID TO REST TO ONE OF
THE MOST HALLOWED PLACES AND ALL OF COLORADO, FORT LOGAN
CEMETERY. —
SOME NEARLY DIED ON THE BATTLEFIELD. NOW AS FOX 31 PHOTOJOURNALISTS
CHOSE US THEY FOUND A NEW WAY TO SERVE THEIR COUNTRY.>>FORT LOGAN IS A PLACE OF
HONOR. THIS IS HALLOWED GROUND.>>IT IS WELL OVER 200 ACRES.>>I LOVE IT OUT HERE. I THINK IT’S AN ABSOLUTELY
BEAUTIFUL CEMETERY. THIS TIME OF YEAR WE ARE
SCRAMBLING, TRYING TO FIX IRRIGATION ISSUES. TRYING TO GET THE GRASS TO LOOK
RIGHT. WITH MEMORIAL DAY JUST AROUND
THE CORNER, EVERYONE WHO WORKS HERE IS GREAT AND WE ALL GET
ALONG WITH ONE ANOTHER. YOU HAVE TO BE EXTREMELY
DELICATE.>>DEATH IS A HARD THING FOR
EVERYBODY AND IT GIVES FAMILIES A SENSE OF CLOSURE, IT GIVES THE
REST OF THE PUBLIC –>>THEY ALL ARE DESERVING OF THE
UTMOST RESPECT AND HONOR. IT IS A HEAVY TOLL ON SOME
PEOPLE TO WORK AROUND THIS WITH EVERY FAMILY COMING HERE AND
EXPERIENCING GRIEF IN SOME CAPACITY.>>IT GIVES ME A SENSE OF
PURPOSE AND SOMETHING TO DO.>>ALL OF THE VETERANS OUT HERE
ARE HEROES AS FAR AS I’M CONCERNED.>>90 PERCENT OF OUR STAFF IS
VETERANS AND –>>I DO COME TO WORK AND FEEL A
SENSE OF CONTINUED SERVICE. I
KNOW THAT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO MYSELF AND OTHERS HERE.>>IN THE ARMY I WAS A TANKER.>>TO COME HERE, WORKING WITH
THE AMOUNT OF VETERANS THAT ARE EMPLOYED HERE AS WELL WAS KIND
OF JUST LIKE COMING HOME.>>I WAS IN THE ARMY FOR YEARS. SPENT 15 MONTHS IN IRAQ. I STEPPED IN A IUD ENDS —
AS A RESULT OF THAT EXPLOSION, I LOST MY LEFT HAND AT THE REST.>>IT’S AN EASY CAUSE TO GET
BEHIND. EVERYBODY HAS SOMETHING ON A
PERSONAL LEVEL THAT HELPS THEM COME TO WORK MOTIVATED AND
COMMITTED TO IMPROVING EVERYTHING HERE.>>FAMILY MEMBERS OF THE VETERAN
OR SPOUSE WHO IS BEING INTERRED MEANS A LOT MORE TO THEM TO BE
SEEING IT IS VETERANS TAKING CARE OF VETERANS AND SETS AN
OBVIOUS WAY.>>IT MEANS A LOT TO ME AND THE
OTHER VETERANS WORKING OUT HERE.>>EVERY FAMILY WE ENCOUNTER
HERE UNDERSTANDS THE SAME TYPES OF THINGS THAT MY MOTHER
UNDERSTANDS FROM MY TIME IN.>>IT FEELS LIKE I’M STILL
SERVING AND GIVING BACK. STILL PART OF THE TEAM.>>ULTIMATELY I WANT PEOPLE TO
VIEW THIS CEMETERY AS A DESTINATION. I WANT PEOPLE VISITING THE
DENVER AREA TO THINK THEY HAVE TO COME BY FORT LOGAN BEFORE
THEY LEAVE.>>THESE MONUMENTS OUT HERE ARE
INTENDED TO LAST.>>IT WASN’T FOR THEM, I
WOULDN’T HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY THAT I HAD. THEY ALL ARE DESERVING OF THE
UTMOST RESPECT AND HONOR.>>WE CERTAINLY WILL ALWAYS
STRIVE TO MAKE IT LOOK BETTER AND BETTER UNTIL IT IS CLOTHES
TO PERFECT.>>THESE ARE THE GREATEST OUR
NATION HAS TO OFFER. PAY YOUR RESPECTS AND THANKED
THEM FOR EVERYTHING THAT THEY GAVE AND SACRIFICED FOR ALL OF
US.>>IT’S A SHRINE TO WHAT THIS
COUNTRY WAS BUILT ON. IT’S A LASTING MONUMENT TO THE
HARD WORK AND DEDICATION OF THIS COUNTRY —
>>TO REMEMBER THIS IS HOLLOWED GROUND IN A PLACE OF HONOR AND
RESPECT.>>VETERANS TAKING CARE OF
VETERANS, LONG AFTER THEY SERVE THEIR COUNTRY. WHEN WE COME BACK TONIGHT, THE
PROMISE EVERY VETERAN IS GUARANTEED FUNERAL HONORS BUT
NOT EVERY VETERAN GETS THEM. WHAT THEY’RE DOING HERE TO
CHANGE THAT. BUT THE MAN IN CHARGE OF FORT
LOGAN TELLS US IN HIS OWN WORDS WHY HE WORKS HERE.>>MY NAME IS JOE TERM BACK. I’M THE DIRECTOR OF FORT LOGAN. I WORKED HERE BECAUSE MULTIPLE
TIMES EVERY DAY I GET TO MEET SOMEBODY WHO IS HAVING ONE OF
THE WORST DAYS OF THEIR LIVES AND HOPEFULLY MAKE IT A LITTLE
BIT BETTER. IT’S A TEAM EFFORT AND TAKES A
LOT OF WORK AND EFFORT BY MANY PEOPLE TO GET THIS DONE. THE BEST THING IS IT’S A
NATIONAL SHRINE DEDICATED TO OUR VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES. THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE SERVED OUR
COUNTRY AND SACRIFICED FOR THEIR COUNTRY. WELCOME BACK AS WE PAY TRIBUTE
TO A PLACE THAT PAYS TRIBUTES TO FORT —
TURNS OUT NOT EVERY VETERAN GETS THE FUNERAL HONORS THEY ARE
ENTITLED TO. ONCE A MONTH PATRIOTIC PEOPLE
GATHER HERE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. SEAN HOLZ SHOWS US.>>TODAY WE ARE GOING OUT AND
HONORING THE VETERANS THAT DID NOT GET MILITARY HONORS IN THE
LAST MONTH. THAT SET UP ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO. WE SEE A LOT OF VETERANS NOT
GETTING THE HONORS THEY WERE PROMISED WHEN THEY ENLISTED. THAT IS WHY WE ARE HERE TO
ENSURE THAT THEY DO GET THAT. I’VE LOST TWO OF THE GENTLEMAN
OUT OF MY OWN UNIT. I KNOW WHAT GOES ON AND WHO WANT
TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT FAMILY GETS THE SAME CLOSURE.>>MY FATHER WAS BURIED HERE A
LONG TIME AGO. HIS NAME IS WAYNE G REYNOLDS. MY STEP FATHER IN LAW PASSED
AWAY MARCH 27. WHEN I FOUND OUT THROUGH
WORD-OF-MOUTH THAT THIS SERVICE WAS AVAILABLE, AND NEW IT WOULD
BE REALLY IMPORTANT. IT’S SO IMPORTANT TO RECOGNIZE
PEOPLE WHO HAVE SERVED THEIR COUNTRY. IT’S REALLY NICE TO BE ABLE TO
PARTICIPATE.>>I WAS BLOWN AWAY. I REALLY WAS JUST EXPECTING TO
COME IN AND STAND AROUND AND WATCH SOMETHING. I DIDN’T HAVE ANY IDEA I WOULD
FEEL SO EMOTIONAL. THEN WHEN MY DAD’S NAME .-DOT
RED, IT WAS A BIG DEAL. I KNOW THAT IT WOULD MAKE HIM
HAPPY.>>PEOPLE LIKE THESE MILITARY
MEN THAT COME TO HONOR THOSE THEY DON’T EVEN KNOW AND THEY
WILL BE SENDING THEM OFF.>>IT’S AMAZING THAT THERE IS SO
MUCH LOVE HERE. JUST TO TAKE THE TIME TO DO
THIS.>>JUST TO MAKE SURE THE GUYS
GET WHAT THEY DESERVE.>>GIVING THOSE GUYS WHAT THEY
DESERVE AND A LITTLE BIT OF CLOSURE FOR THE FAMILIES OF
AMERICAN HEROES. WILL WE
RETURN, THE WORK LOAD WITH 20-30 SERVICES EVERY DAY HERE YOU
WOULD THINK IT WOULD BE TOUGH TO MAKE FAMILIES FEEL SPECIAL. NOT SO. WE WILL SHOW YOU COMING UP. AS WE GO TO BREAK, MEET ANOTHER
VETERAN WHO CONSIDERS IT HIS DUTY TO WORK HERE. HE TELLS US WHY IN HIS OWN
WORDS.>>MY NAME IS MARK HOLMES AND
THE CITY OF AND THE REASON I WORK HERE IS
IT’S A GREAT HONOR. I’M A VETERAN MYSELF. I WANT TO CONTINUE SERVING
VETERANS. THIS IS MY WAY OF SERVING THEM. YOU DON’T DO THIS TO GET RICH OR
FOR FAME. YOU DO THIS BECAUSE IT IS WHAT
YOU WANT TO DO. WELCOME BACK. THERE ARE ABOUT 20-30 SERVICES
CONDUCTED EVERY DAY AT FORT LOGAN NATIONAL CEMETERY AND WE
ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE FAMILY OF SHIRLEY SADOWSKI FOR ALLOWING US
TO ATTEND HER’S. SURELY DIED BACK IN DECEMBER AND
NEARLY 90 YEARS OLD. SHE WAS CREMATED AND INTERRED
OUT HERE EARLIER THIS MONTH. DON’T LET ANYBODY TELL YOU THERE
IS CLOSURE. THERE IS NO CLOSURE WHEN YOU
LOSE A MOTHER. WHILE HER REMAINS ARE HERE, SHE
IS IN GOD’S EMBRACE. GOD HAS CHOSEN SURELY AND ONTO
DEATHS WE SHALL RETURN. —
SHILEY MADE THE WORLD TO RISE UP TO MEET YOU. MAY THE WIND BE ALWAYS AT YOUR
BACK. MAY THE SUNSHINE BE WARM UPON
YOUR FACE. MAY YOUR MORNINGS BRING JOY AND
YOUR EVENINGS BRING PEACE. MAYOR TROUBLES GROW FEW AS YOUR
