How to Survive in the Desert : How to Find a Campsite in the Desert

Hi. I’m Mike Meyers of Zion Wilderness Survival School for Expert Village. One might wonder why campsite selection is important in a survival situation. Certainly the comfort portion may not be important. But, there are things that need to be considered when you decide to bunk down for the night. And, one would have to be concerned that any loose rock could fall down if you were camped below, and injure or…

How to Pack for a Camping Trip : Choose the Right Sleep Pads for Your Camping Trip

Hi! My name is Dan and I am here with Expert Village today to talk about sleeping pads. There are two varieties; foam pads and air mattresses. There are a few pros and cons to each. Foam pads are light weight and durable; however, they are not very packable. You can typically only roll or fold them. You end up with quite a large package. The nice thing about them is that you can’t pop them. You can also if you blow out a strap on your backpack, you can cut a little piece off without compromising the integrity of the pad and use it as an improvised splint for…

How to Survive in the Desert : How to Make Shelter in the Desert

Hi. I’m Mike Meyers with Zion Wilderness Survival School for Expert Village. We talked earlier about when you’re out in a survival situation seeking a place to sleep. But, a more immediate concern in any survival situation is finding shelter period. It can be in the middle of the afternoon. It could be at nighttime. Anytime. In the winter, if you’re in an area with snow, sometimes the only place to seek shelter is actually in the snow. You’ve probably heard of digging a snow cave or building what’s called a quimsy, which is like an igloo. Obviously, we’d have a difficult time demonstrating that right now. But, there are…
