Texas plans to move 1,000 inmates to air-conditioned prison units

Texas doesn’t have air conditioning in almost 75% of its prisons and a few years ago inmates at one prison sued saying that the temperatures they have to suffer through during the summer constitute cruel and unusual punishment. They point to, very often, that there have been 23 heat-related deaths in Texas prisons since 1998 and hundreds more illnesses that have been documented. So they’re asking for these changes within the prison system and the state has been reluctant to add air conditioning, which is the main factor that’s tying this all together, because it’s expensive to add air conditioning. So it does get above 100 degrees during the summer…

You DON’T Want To Be Sent To This Prison (Worst Prison In The World In 2019)

“The degree of civilization in a society is revealed by entering its prisons.” That was said by the writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky, and he knew something about prisons as he spent four years in a Siberian prison camp. He described his quarters like this, “In summer, intolerable closeness; in winter, unendurable cold. All the floors were rotten. Filth on the floors an inch thick. We were packed like herrings in a barrel. From dusk to dawn it was impossible not to behave like pigs.” While a 23-hour lockdown in a modern prison in the USA might be bad, contending with daily violence, bullying, and boredom- there are some places in the…

Economic Update: Military Spending and Debt [Trailer]

WOLFF: War is paid for, usually, by debts, and the reason for that is simple. If you made the people in a society, like the United States, actually pay with taxes for what a war costs, they’d be a lot less pro-war than they might otherwise be. HENNELLY: What I wanted to do is look at 1968 and Martin Luther King’s dream and our 2020 living nightmare. “When machines and computers, profit motives, and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered.” [MLK] So that’s the prism through which I want to look at this. And indeed…

    Bolivia’s Anti-Imperialist Military School

We are building a new Bolivia. The United States influences other states, in order to achieve its objectives. They will surely declare Bolivia as a threat to the national security of the United States, I’m telling you in advance, as they did with Venezuela. We study the deconstruction of history. We have never before felt so proud of being Bolivians. Today we are in Santa Cruz, at the anti-imperialist military academy. The only one in Latin America and in the entire world. And it has one goal: to combat imperialism. Let’s check it out. The fact that an anti-imperialist school exists at all is remarkable, but that one exists in…

Angola Prison Hospice: Opening the Door

Yeah. Oh man, it’s been very touching. You know, it brought tears to my eyes because by working here you get close, you know you get a relationship with the guys, you know, and it really hurts you. And, just being there for them, you know, it takes a lot out of you but it puts a lot in you. I did a lot of wrong, I hurt a lot of people out there. But when I heard about hospice, it was in my heart to join because I say, this will be my way of giving back to society. Can’t tell those people that I’m sorry for what I…

Do My Sentencing Preparations Really Matter? (federal prison camp)

Sentencing Preparations Hi everyone. I’m Justin Paperny with White Collar Advice. It’s very good to be with you. Today I’m going to talk about Do Your Efforts Really Matter? I want to do this video, in part, because I received a call this morning from a defendant in North Carolina, actually not far from Wake Forest University, where I’ve done some speaking in the past. This defendant called after watching a video I filmed last year called 10 Ways to Get More Time in Prison and in that video I talked about if you don’t accept responsibility, or disclose your substance abuse, or if you continue to spend really aggressively,…
