Yours to explore: working in Fort McMurray, Canada | Shell Careers

I would say overall Fort Mac is a nice place to be. The best reason for me to come to Fort Mac was because I thought it’ll give me the opportunity to work on the biggest mining project in Canada. The scale of our mining operation at the Atmospheric Fines Drying facility is massive. We move close to 50 to 100 thousand tons per day. Responsibility of my job entails managing an area which is close to 2 million square metres. I have close to 50 people in my department, and our operational budget is close to $30 million. It feels really good to be where I am now. My…

The Garry Oak Learning Meadow at Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites

Garry oak ecosystems are a really special ecosystem, and we like to call them an eco-cultural landscape. ‘Eco’ meaning ecological, and ‘cultural’ because of their longstanding significance to the Coast Salish First Nations. The Coast Salish First Nations coexisted with Garry oak ecosystems for thousands of years. We can think of them really as Coast Salish gardens. It’s a very unique ecosystem in Canada. There’s literally over 900 species of plants, so it’s a very biodiverse ecosystem. Unfortunately, here on Southern Vancouver Island there’s only 5% remaining of the original range of Garry oak ecosystems. And that has a lot to do with forestry practices, with conversion of meadow lands…

How to Build a Pillow Fort!

[Intro] Welcome back to the fort, for more cool science about forts and forces! Last time, we showed you how to build a sheet fort, using a bedsheet, some books, and a couple of chairs or just a nice, long piece of string. Those forts were possible thanks to tension, the force that happens when we pull something tight. By putting tension on the sheet, we were able to turn it into a roof for our fort and an indoor tent! But tension is not the only force you can use to build a fort! A force called compression comes in pretty handy, too. While tension is the force of…

How To Build a Sheet Fort

[Intro] Hey there! Squeeks and I are just hanging out, building a blanket fort. That’s right! We built a fort…inside our fort! I bet you’ve built a fort before, too. If you use your imagination, you can come up with all kinds of creative ways to make a space of your own, for reading, snacking and — hiding! You can use cushions, blankets, and even furniture. But no matter how you build them, all forts have one really important thing in common; they need forces to stay together. You might remember that we’ve talked about forces before—they’re the pushes and pulls that objects put on each other. Forces are everywhere.…
